If you use the attic only for storage, insulating the attic floor is almost always the smartest first step. The installer lays insulation boards or rolls loose on the attic floor; the heat then stays in the lived-in floor below and the attic becomes the cold buffer space. In many homes the work is completed in a single day.

Because the insulation lies out of sight, no finishing is needed — a big saving compared with insulating the roof slope.
